Note To Self: Show Some Magic

I was at my dad’s house the other day and I found this old note to self, hanging on my wall where I use to do my university work. The list reads:

  • Show some magic.
  • Invest in knowledge.
  • Diversify.
  • Know your goals.
  • Try it [new things] on a small scale first.
  • Experiment.
  • Help your community.
  • Go with your feeling.
  • Daydream.
  • Have a sense of humor.

I had written this list to help keep me on the right track in pursuit of a creative career. 3 years later, I see that I have continued to do some points while falling a little back in others.

Between then and now I have had to deal with a lot of obstacles including some family/medical emergencies. There have been trials and tribulations such as the societal build want of a better camera so I can make “better” films instead of using the equipment I have which is more than enough.  I’ve had to deal with inner art demons that really like it when I compare myself to other, more “successful” industry specialists instead of focusing on who I am as a filmmaker and what that means. I’ve been surrounded by extremely pessimistic and cynical people who seem to choose to live in a dark cold world and I struggled a lot of the time to keep my little candle of hope lit. I am in a far better place now but this list reminded me that even in my darkest moments when I didn’t know how things were going to turn out, I stuck to my guns and came out safe and sound in the end.

I really enjoyed going over this list again and the simplicity of it because it’s all about bettering the self, staying true to one’s self, and not becoming more like someone else, buying “better” equipment, or accepting defeat. Ultimately this list is about being a better self, a better filmmaker, a better citizen. It can even be boiled down to a few points that I think can help elevate anyone’s mood or lifestyle:

  • Invest wisely in yourself and your mental/physical well being. This includes education.
  • Choose love and help others.
  • Have a sense of humor. Don’t take life too seriously or you might forget to live it.
  • Dream, experiment, play. It is good for you.
  • Live your best life and show some magic, regardless of haters and naysayers. You deserve to to let yourself shine.
